When Lou Oberndorf reflects on his time at UF Health Shands Hospital being cared for by Li-Ming Su, M.D., professor and chair of the UF Department of Urology, the word “miracle” comes to mind.

“Three years ago, we confirmed I had prostate cancer,” says Oberndorf, CEO and chair of Operative Experience Inc., a Maryland-based company that creates high-fidelity simulators for use in medical education. “Dr. Su performed my prostate surgery. Thank God, as of today, the surgery was a complete success. I describe Dr. Su as someone who saved my life.”

Oberndorf’s experiences inspired him and his wife, Rosemary, to establish The Lou and Rosemary Oberndorf Prostate Cancer Innovation Fund, which will support the addition of a new faculty member, Wayne Brisbayne, M.D., in the UF Department of Urology and increased research on new diagnostic imaging and therapeutic techniques in the fight against prostate cancer. Brisbayne, who is completing a urologic oncology fellowship at UCLA, will join the department in August.

Mr. Bergen Lemack a senior undergraduate student at the University of Florida College of Medicine, who’s been working in the UF Department of Urology Basic Science Laboratory since 2019, was awarded a 2021 Summer Student Scholarship through the Endourological Society.

His project entitled, “Investigations of a novel tea leaf for kidney stone disease prevention” will involve testing the concentration of oxalate from commercial tea products with and without a novel tea leaf that can degrade oxalate. If these leaves are able to lower the amount of oxalate in hot or cold teas, a therapy could be developed to allow kidney stone formers to drink tea without the risk of stone formation.

Please join us in congratulating Bergen, and good luck with your project!

UF Health Launches NIH-Sponsored Trial to ‘POuND OUT’ Painful Kidney Stones

Kidney and low back pain

The UF Department of Urology is recruiting participants for the 18-month “POuND OUT” study, one of only a few National Institutes of Health-sponsored drug trials aimed at preventing uric acid kidney stones.

Uric acid is a compound in all urine. It accounts for about 10% of kidney stones from a specific population whose urine pH is too acidic and results in the compound crystalizing. The current standard of care for a patient with kidney stones is to prescribe six to 10 doses of bicarbonate pills a day for the rest of the patient’s life, but adhering to that treatment can be daunting.

“A lot of uric acid patients struggle to maintain that regimen long term,” said Benjamin Canales, M.D., M.P.H., an associate professor and director of research at UF College of Medicine’s department of urology, who is facilitating the clinical trial. “It seems that we are masking the problem with a bicarbonate instead of trying to treat the underlying causes, which are obesity and diabetes.”

Researchers Using Artificial Intelligence to Improve the Diagnosis and Management of Incidental Kidney Tumors

Doctor terry is wearing a white doctors coat with a white collared shirt and red tie.

About 70,000 new kidney tumors are diagnosed in the United States every year, most of them found incidentally on a CT scan or an MRI. Most are small, <4 cm in diameter, and there is no reliable way to predict with imaging alone whether a kidney mass is cancer or not. Unlike other tumors that are amenable to biopsy, renal mass biopsy has a fairly high nondiagnostic rate.

“The reason it matters is that up to 20% of these tumors can be noncancerous,” explained Russell S. Terry, Jr. M.D., an assistant professor and director of minimally invasive surgery education and new technologies in UF College of Medicine’s department of urology. “If we remove people’s kidneys or part of their kidneys for 100% of these small masses, then up to 20% of the surgeries might be unnecessary.”
