TV20’s Alex Calamia Grows A Beard for No Shave November!
At the beginning of November, TV20’s Alex Calamia pledged to let his beard grow. In doing so, he hoped to bring awareness to Men’s Health issues. Men are less likely to go to a doctor than a woman, which is part of the spark for the initiative.
Dr. Padraic O’Malley is a UF Health Oncologist. He is growing a mustache for “Movember” along with other men in his department. The UF Health Urology department have a Movember shave party every year at the end of November. They have raised about 10-thousand dollars for charity over the years.
Whether young or old, men should keep in mind cancers that are specific to them. Dr. O’Malley says 1 in every 9 men will get prostate cancer – many of those men will be middle age or older. Testicular cancer is less common but occurs in much younger men – who are usually in their 20s.

UF Urology November Shave Off
The 7th Annual UF Department of Urology celebration of No Shave November Men’s Health issues culminated with the traditional shave party on November 30th. All legal mustache attempts, for better or worse, were awarded including faculty, residents, and extenders of all genders. Tom and Leah Stringer once again opened their home to all, and as you can see a good time was had by all.

Congratulations to Dr. Joseph Grajo and UF Health Urology Team for recent publication!
Congratulations to Dr. Joseph Grajo (Assistant Professor, UF Health/Shands Radiology and Urology) and the rest of the UF Heath Urology team (Drs. Terry, Noennig, Pavlinec, Bozorgmehri, Crispen, and Su) for their recent publication entitled, “Using Aorta-Lesion-Attenuation Difference (ALAD) on Preoperative Contrast-Enhanced CT Scan to Differentiate between Malignant and Benign Renal Tumors.”
This publication, which has been accepted and is “in press” in Urology, highlights a new CT algorithm that appears to discriminate well between a malignant and benign type of kidney cancer with high accuracy. In the future, this technique may help patients avoid a diagnostic needle biopsy and even perhaps surgery.
