UF Urology and UroGators represented at the 2018 Florida Urological Society Annual Meeting

FLORIDA urological society logoThe 70th annual meeting of the Florida Urological Society met over Labor Day weekend at the Saddlebrook Resort near Tampa, Florida.

Between current faculty, residents and alumni, UroGators were well represented including the current SESAUA President Scott Sellinger. The scientific content, as usual, was timely and cutting edge. The opportunities for fellowship and networking were ample as well and included a banquet at the Florida Aquarium on Saturday. UF resident Jennifer Kuo placed 3rd among all Florida program residents in the Milton Copeland Pyelogram Hour. The resident contests including the Victor Politano Debates are always entertaining, sharp and witty and reflect the hard work of the residents. Our state society annual meeting is consistently a favorite of the residents and members. At the end of the meeting, Rafael Carrion handed the gavel to Kevin Lee. Rafael ran an excellent meeting and gave a moving tribute to his father Hernan, a former FUS President as well. Next year’s meeting will be at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando, with two of our faculty, Drs. Paul Crispen and Larry Yeung, serving as the scientific co-chairs.

The UroGators and UF Department of Urology now prepare for the 60th anniversary of residency training celebration on October 5th and 6th in Gainesville. The events include the David M. Drylie Visiting Professorship lecture by Steven Nakada and the LSU vs Florida tailgate and football game on Saturday. Another proud moment for the men and women of UF that call themselves UroGators.

Urology's 60th Anniversary Celebration October 4 – 6, 2018, The UF Department of Urology and the UroGators hosted the 5th Annual David M. Drylie Visiting  Professor Events with Dr. Stephen Nakada, Chairman, Department of Urology, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, as the guest lecturer.

The permanently endowed Visiting Professorship was established through the generosity of our alumni organization, the UroGators. A visiting professorship adds valuable prestige to our institution. It enhances national visibility and is integral to the success of a top-tier program. It is part of the legacy that is UF Urology and the UroGators.

dr nakada with uf urology residentsThe resident centric event began on Thursday, 10/4 with our UF Urology Residents hosting a dinner for Dr. Nakada at Leonardo’s 706. Great food, conversation and bi-directional learning took place in a relaxed atmosphere.

On Friday, 10/5, Dr. Nakada shared updates and insights with faculty and residents on management of the stone patient.  Our residents and researchers presented case studies and valued his feedback and contributions.  One of our residents remarked, “Thank you so much for bringing Dr. Nakada. The way he thinks and how he challenges us to think differently is so motivating. He is amazing”.  It was truly a time of learning and motivation.

DR NAKADA WITH RESIDENTSDr. Nakada’s Visiting Professor Lecture on Urolithiasis 2018: What Matters, What Doesn’t”  was held in the Harrell Medical Building South Learning Studio on Friday afternoon at 5:00 pm, and welcomed faculty, residents, alumni and guests including faculty from within the medical center.

The Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention was the venue for the Friday night event to celebrate 60 years of Urology at the University of Florida.  UroGators, including our first graduating resident Dr. Elliot Klorfein, were welcomed to an evening of great music, food and memories.  Seeing UroGators of all decades getting to  know one another,  speaking and sharing memories made it a most special night.

UroGators Alumni at tailgateSaturday, 10/6 was our annual UroGators Alumni Society Tailgate held on the North Lawn of the Reitz Union.  We welcomed back recent graduates, guests, family and a host of friends. A win by the Gators topped off a special weekend.

These events would not have been successful without the attendance of so many of our recent graduates and alumni.  We appreciate you and thank you for coming…and look forward to seeing you again soon. Special thanks goes out to Ronda Patton for her tireless efforts to coordinate this special event.

Movember “No Shave November”: Supporting Men’s Health

$
0
0

Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

By encouraging men to get involved, Movember aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. Besides annual check-ups, Movember encourages men to be aware of family history of cancer and to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

STOP MEN DYING TOO YOUNG

Men are facing a health crisis that isn’t being talked about.
They are dying too young, before their time.

GROW A MOUSTACHE

Raise awareness for Movember by growing a moustache.

MOVE

Men and women alike can embrace the sweaty Mo this Movember by being active.
Set a distance goal at the start of the month, and walk, run, cycle, swim or row your way to achieving it.

I AM THE DIFFERENCE

Men die on average six years earlier than women. But you can be the difference and help us change this startling stat. Men, get checked!  Women, encourage the men in your life to take their health seriously!
