The basic science laboratory of the division, headed by Dr. Benjamin Canales and Dr. Saeed Khan, has had another stellar year. With continued NIH R01, R03, and K08 funding, they submitted an invited manuscript to Nature Reviews Disease Primers on nephrolithiasis encompassing pathogenesis, surgical treatments, and medical management.

Dr. Canales was a visiting professor at Nagoya City University in April of this year through the AUA/Japanese Urological Association Academic Scholar Exchange Program. He also attended and spoke at the recent NIDDK P20 Directors Meeting in Madison, WI. Dr. Khan gave plenary talks at the 3rd Meeting of the EAU Section of Urolithiasis (EULIS; Alicante, Spain) and the 13th International Biomineralization Meeting (Granada, Spain).

Through the NIH T32 mechanism, the stone laboratory received funding for the next two years for Dr. Ryan Chastain-Gross and for an additional T32 fellow (TBD). Paul Dominguez Gutierrez, PhD, successfully finished his T32 fellowship focused on the role of macrophages in stone/crystal clearance, and his first manuscript was accepted with revisions in the Journal of Urology. Dr. Dominguez Gutierrez also had abstracts accepted at the 2015 American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Annual Meeting and the Society for Basic Urologic Research (SBUR) Fall Symposium. He submitted a 2 year Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar grant that we expect will be funded starting July 2016 through June 2018. Good luck Dr. Dominguez Gutierrez!

Larry Yeung

Each month, select faculty and staff practicing at UF Health receive a Great Catch Award at Quality Grand Rounds. These individuals are commended for “catching” a potentially harmful situation and interceding before the mistake affected a patient.

On June 24th, Dr. Yeung received a Great Catch Award from the Sebastian Ferrero Office of Clinical Quality and Patient Safety.

Thank you Dr. Yeung for you diligence, excellent communication and teamwork skills that intercepted a potential patient harm.

Overcoming Prostate Cancer

Li Ming SuAccording to the The American Cancer Society, about 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with the prostate cancer in their lifetime.  African american men are twice as likely to get the aggressive form of prostate cancer, and twice as likely to die from the disease than any other ethnic group.

“Not all prostate cancers are cancer killers, and I think we need to recognize that some can be watched safely. But we do want to make sure that we’re not missing those cancers that are a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” said Dr. Li-Ming Su with UF Health/Department of Urology.

Early detection is key.  “We recommend starting at age 55 to 69 for the average man. Now if you have a first degree male relative, you start earlier, or if you’re African American race. Early detection equates providing more options for treatment,” said Dr. Su.

At the University of Florida Department of Urology we have an opening for a one-year advanced Endourology/MIS fellowship approved by the Endourological Society starting July 2016. This fellowship is completely funded and offers flexibility in training in either endourology or laparoscopy/robotics or both alongside experienced surgeons and mentors including Drs. Vincent Bird, Benjamin Canales and Li-Ming Su.

Fellowship training is centered at UF Health-Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, with a rotation at the Malcom Randall VA Hospital located across the street. Unique features of this fellowship include:

  • Broad clinical training in endourology, laparoscopy and robotic surgery with the ability to tailor one’s fellowship based on individual interest.
  • Animate “wet” lab run twice a month in a fully equipped training laboratory with anesthesia support.
  • Robotic simulation training weekly.

This is an excellent opportunity for any graduating resident or fellow seeking additional training in endourology or minimally invasive urologic surgery.

Interested applicants are asked to forward their CV with two letters of recommendation to Linda Horne at 352-273-6870 or linda.horne@urology.ufl.edu.

The 2015 David M. Drylie, MD Visiting Professorship Lecture & UroGators Alumni Weekend, November 6 – 7, 2015

This year’s Visiting Professor Events and our UroGators Fall Alumni gathering was a time for celebration and honoring the memory of a pioneer.

On Nov. 6-7, the University of Florida Department of Urology hosted its third-annual David M. Drylie, MD Visiting Professorship Lecture & UroGators Alumni Weekend. At the Nov. 6 evening reception held at the University of Florida’s Harn Museum of Art, about 120 former and current faculty, former and current residents and fellows, family and friends gathered as we honored the memory of Dr. Dana Moody. Dr. Moody, who passed away on Sept. 2, was the first female resident of the UF Urology program. Her husband, Dr. Rodney Moody and their daughter Emily were on hand as UF Urology Interim Chair Dr. Tom Stringer, along with the four current female urology residents, presented a gift and flowers to her husband and daughter. Mary Elizabeth, their eldest daughter, was unable to attend.

moody

“Dana was a pioneer in our program – she was a groundbreaker,”
Dr. Stringer said.   “Her memory will always live on
with us in this department
.”

Earlier in the day, Dr. Shlomo Raz (Professor, Department of Urology Chief, Division of Female Urology, Reconstructive Surgery and Urodynamics, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA) presented at Grand Rounds as the David M. Drylie Visiting Professor. He spent the day with faculty and working with residents. He too was honored at the evening reception.

On Nov. 7, the UroGators tailgate got the day started in the Plaza of Americas hours before UF faced Vanderbilt in football for homecoming. The game proved to be closer than expected with a 9-7 UF win. The win did earn UF the SEC East Championship and a berth in the SEC Title Game to be played on Dec. 5 in Atlanta.

I want to thank everyone who took time out of their schedules to be with us on this memorable weekend,” Dr. Stringer said. “It is weekends like this that reminds me how important our training and heritage is to so many. I see many of you at conferences throughout the year, but this annual event is distinctly UF Urology. For those who could not make it this year, I truly hope you make every effort to make it back next year. We will always have a dynamic and relevant visiting professor, and, of course, it is the perfect place to rekindle old memories with old friends.”

President, UroGators Alumni Society
